MARICOPA, Ariz.; July 21, 2009 – Yulex Corporation will host author and expert on the history of rubber Mark Finlay for a presentation July 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. His presentation, “Growing American Guayule: a Century of a Search for a Domestic and Sustainable Source of Rubber” will be held at Yulex, 37860 W. Smith-Enke Road, Maricopa, Ariz. 85238.
After a 100 year search for a domestic sustainable rubber source for the U.S., guayule rubber has emerged as the forerunner and Maricopa, Arizona has become the new industry’s epicenter. Yulex Corporation produces natural rubber and rubber latex from the guayule shrub and is supplying its material to manufacturers of medical, consumer and industrial products eager to replace petroleum-based or imported natural materials from Southeast Asia.
Finlay, a professor of history at Armstrong Atlantic State University, is the author of several articles on the history of “chemurgy,” the intersection of agriculture and industry, as well as the recent book, Growing American Rubber: Strategic plants and the politics of National Security. “After a half century of a world dominated by plastics, synthetic materials, and a long list of products derived from fossil fuels, people are becoming more aware that agricultural products can provide sustainable solutions to the world’s resource needs,” Finlay wrote.
“Mark Finlay has written an excellent historical account of rubber’s history in America, and Yulex is pleased to be creating new sustainable innovations that will lead to the next chapter,” said Jeff Martin, CEO, Yulex Corporation. Yulex has opened up its archives to Finlay who will also tour the company’s local operation.
A limited number of seats for Finlay’s presentation will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis to interested members of the public. Contact Yulex at (520) 381-2202.
