Maricopa, Ariz. (June 25, 2008) - COPA cares, a community project sponsored by the City of Maricopa Community Services Department and ACE Hardware, will be cleaning up overgrown weeds and straightening up yards at 18 homes in The Villages of Rancho El Dorado on Saturday, June 28 beginning at 6:30 a.m.

COPA Cares has tackled two additional projects in the past month, yard clean ups at Alterra and Acacia Crossings. Over 80 volunteers helped pull weeds and straighten yards at 60 properties in these neighborhoods.

“COPA Cares benefits the community by bringing people together to assist one another,” stated Community Services Director Martin McDonald. “Neighbors are uniting in an effort to help those that are unable to clean their yards, and to help with yard maintenance of empty houses.”

“Maricopa is a community with a heart,” Mayor Anthony Smith proclaimed. “And, COPA Cares demonstrates this. As this program expands beyond yard clean-up and into other facets of assistance, it is the community that will come together and make this program successful.”

If you are interested in assisting with upcoming COPA Cares projects, contact Brian Duncan at brian.duncan@maricopa-az.gov or 520/316-6989.

Press Release from
The City Of Maricopa
June 3, 2008

Maricopa, Ariz. (June 3, 2008) - At tonight’s City Council meeting, held at 7:00 p.m. at Global Water Center, the Council voted unanimously to award a contract to DBA Construction in the amount of $2,444,489.80 to construct a bridge over the Santa Rosa Wash on Honeycutt Road.

The bridge will be four lanes wide, include pedestrian sidewalks and is ADA compliant. Construction on the bridge is expected to begin in early July with an estimated completion date in January 2009.

“It is anticipated that Honeycutt Road will remain open during bridge development,” stated Development Services Director Brent Billingsley. “The only exception would be a short closure for the construction of the temporary bypass road.”

This will be the City’s first major construction project. The bridge was originally stipulated to the Tortosa development, but in order to ensure citizen safety and move the completion date forward the City took over the project.

Funding is $1 million from transportation DIF, $750,000 from Pinal County half-cent road tax and the remaining $750,000 is from the general fund capital reserve.

Prom is one of the most exciting times in a teenager’s life, but also one of the most dangerous!
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, on a typical prom weekend:

48 American teenagers are killed in vehicle accidents

5,202 are injured in vehicle accidents

40% of the deaths are alcohol-related

Based on statistics like these, CW6 and local advertisers are teaming up to promote a drug- and alcohol-free prom.

Make the Promise!
I pledge by signing this Prom Promise to be alcohol free and drug free on Prom Night.

I agree to abstain from alcohol. I will not accept a ride from anyone who has been drinking alcohol, nor will I bring any alcoholic beverages into a vehicle.

I will have a great time and will be able to remember my Prom Night as a happy and joyous occasion. I promise to use common sense and I understand that these are choices that only I can make.

If you are 18 years old or older, you can submit your pledge online, by filling out the form below.
