More information on Tax-Relief mailing

Consumer News, General — tkingery on August 26, 2009 at 11:35 am

This was seen on AZCentral.com

The president of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps is involved in a mailing about property taxes that federal investigators and prosecutors in three states are calling a fraud.

Carmen Mercer of Tombstone owns the post-office box where thousands of Arizona residents are being asked by a company to send money in order to recover overpaid property taxes.

In an interview Wednesday, Mercer denied being a part of Property Tax Review Board Inc. and claimed that she was wrongly named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by the Arizona Attorney Generals Office. She said she was targeted because of her Minuteman ties.

“We have fought other battles before where the government has targeted us,” Mercer said. “We believe in the rule of law. We always fight for the rule of law.”

Thoughts on Member Benefits & Coupons

Chamber Directors Blog — tkingery on August 21, 2009 at 3:20 pm

In my mail yesterday I received my local monthly coupon paper.  This is an  publication that services Maricopa’s residents.  As I was flipping through it I noticed quite a few Chamber Members have ads and coupons listed.  I think this is great!  Members are out marketing their businesses, but it also made me wonder why these same members do not take advantage of the same types of marketing opportunities that the Chamber provides at no cost as a benefit of membership?

BEWARE OF WIRELESS CRIME AND CRIMINALS

MPD News — tkingery on August 12, 2009 at 2:29 pm

When using a wireless router and or a network that is unsecured anyone could access that network from about two blocks away.  Just as we would not leave our windows and doors open or unlocked we need to think about our wireless networks in the same way.

Don’t invite hackers onto your network by not having it secured.  Identity thieves and other criminals will use nearby unsecured wireless networks run by neighbors and local businesses to commit crime.

Terry Goddard Warns Consumers to Beware of Bogus Property Tax Offer

Attorney General Terry Goddard is warning Arizona homeowners to be wary of official-looking advertisements claiming that a homeowner’s property qualifies for a “property tax reduction review.” This solicitation appears to be an attempt to scam homeowners who are looking to reduce their property tax bill.

The solicitation, which requests a $189 processing fee, is not affiliated with any government entity. The document attempts to appear official and contains a “notice number” and deadline for prompt processing.
